Science Fiction
So, based on that assumption, which of the following movies is science fiction and which is not: The Matrix and Star Wars -- why?
As you read The Giver, try to think about whether the characters are the focus or the setting and whether YOU think it is science fiction or not.

Book Cover

This is the most commonly used book cover for the novel, but here are two more I found:

I want you to tell me what the pictures show you about the novel and what you might think it would be about based on the images. DO NOT look up the summary of the novel and do not answer with a summary of the novel. Also, don't tell me which one you like the best. Just describe what is in the images and how that would make someone think about what would be in the novel. Predict: What MIGHT it be about?

Diegetic? What?
Diegetic (actual sounds that are heard within the story -- e.g. characters talking and birds singing) and Non-diegetic(sounds that are heard by the audience and have no onscreen source)
SBM has a number of Non-diegetic sounds that are also sometimes diegetic. Some of the songs are actually heard by the characters and are playing on the radio or on a record in the scene, but other times the songs pop up and have no real source in the particular scene they are being played in.
Give me an example or either a diegetic or non-diegetic sound from ANY of the scenes you have seen so far.

Pan Shot
Usually the camera is following a moving object and that object is kept in the middle of the frame.
Many times this shot is used when the director wants to follow the action. When you see a pan shot, imagine the camera did NOT follow the action and instead the action moved passed the camera and out of the frame. How would it change the feeling or mood of the scene? It is very insteresting to consider.

Debora is very laid back, but knows when to kick it in gear if the heat is on. She is a sweet girl who has a good understanding of the world around her and knows that time will pass no matter what happens, so she takes everything that happens in an easy way.
Here is Debora! The queen of serene!
What does your name mean?:I actually never knew the meaning of my name. I asked to my parents but they don't know it either.
Why did your parents name you this?: They wanted my name to start with the letter D because my grandmother's(mother's mother) name starts with D. My sister's name starts with J and my other grandmother's name starts with J also. Even though they don't know the meaning of Debora, they said that they gave me that name because they liked how it sounds.
Place of Birth: İstanbul-Avrupa Hastanesi
Why were you born here?: The doctor who gave the birth of my sister at Amerikan Hastanesi, transferred to Avrupa Hastanesi. My mother was pleased with his job the last time, so he wanted him to give my birth too.
What will you do for a living after university?: I haven't decided yet. I have a couple of ideas in my mind. Music and concerts are things that I enjoy the most in life so, I might work in a concert organization company and then have my own company. I also might work in my father's job. He has a textile company and sells shirts to brands all around the world, so he goes to meetings in different countries. I'm good at changing people's minds and make them buy the product so I think I might do that job too.
Age:15
What hobbies do you have?: Listening to music and discovering new artists, snowboarding, wake boarding, going to gym, running by the sea. I also used to play tennis a lot but I stopped playing after I hurt my knee.
Where do you want to go to school: I want to go to NYU because I like big cities and also it's a good university. If I don't get accepted to a good school in New York, I'll study at London because I also think that it's a good place to go to university. If non of these happen I would prefer staying at Istanbul because it's one of my favorite places in the world.
Brothers or sisters?: I have one sister. Her name is Jennifer. She graduated from Koç School 2 years ago. Now, she's a student at Parsons School of Design, in New York. I visited her last holiday but I still miss her a lot because without her the house is very quiet.
Embarrassing moment: Two or three weeks ago our car stopped by the petrol station near our school. I was in a hurry and also hungry so I ran to the market to buy something to eat. When I was about to enter the market I slipped and fell on my butt. I fell so badly that I could remember the moment which I was in the air. Because, the floor was wet my skirt became wet too. My butt hurt so much that I couldn't sleep on it for a week.
What are you doing and where are you at 8pm at night?: I am walking on my way home from my pilates lesson. Sometimes I might be sitting in my room waiting for my mother to come home. At 8pm I might also be eating dinner with my parents, at home.
Favorite movie: I have a couple of favourite movies - Crush, Troy and The Kite Runner are the ones which are in my mind right now.
World’s worst problem: Poverty, Education and Global Warming.
Who is your hero?: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, of course. Without him we wouldn't have a modern life and there wouldn't be Turkey. He fought for us and saved our land.
Biggest decision you are thinking about right now: It's being a FM or TM. Even though I have time to decide, it's really important for my grades next year. I have to decide weather Science or Turkish is better for me. I have to discover which one I like the most.
One word that describes you: ''MOODY.'' I can't control it.

Bird's Eye Shot
Tell me if there is a scene in SBM that is shot this way. Where is it in the film?
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Close Up
Getting ready for a close up is a common phrase that sometimes comes up in American culture and it relates to movie making. A close-up is to show the details of a scene or a severe reaction to something where the actor's reaction is necessary for the scene to move along.
This is where the acting and make-up have to be good. If either are off, a smart audience will know it. Pay attention to when close-ups are used in SBM and what they are used for.
Click here for more of an explanation of "Close Up."

Tracking Shot
I always try to pay attention to a film and notice the tracking shots, so I can laugh to myself about how the actors are being "followed" or tracked in the scene.

For a film, it is more about letting the viewer know where the characters are in the scene before it happens.

Sound
When watching the film, pay attention to the songs sound (not necessarily the lyrics) and how that sound draws out certain emotions. What kinds of instruments are used and do those instruments reflect a certain feeling? Is there a certain rhythm to the music and does that reflect a certain tone or mood? Does the voice of the singer sound a certain way that changes the mood of the song? How?
These are only a few things to consider, but make sure you put on your analytical thinking cap when you are viewing the film and pay close attention to every angle.
Monday, November 24, 2008
Narrative and Film
Only, in a film, the creators are using images instead of words. So, think about how the film develops the story the same way a novel or short story might develop, but think about how the viewer uses the context of the image to understand tone and mood instead of words, like in a novel.

Film Making
If you were working on a film, what part of the process would you most likely be a part of? Would you be an actor in it? Would you do the set design? Would you create the storyboard? The screenplay? The costumes? The make-up and hair? Getting investors for the film? Casting? The director? Lighting?
Keep in mind all of the techniques I bring up on the blog while you watch the film. There are many things Ms. Sevimli will teach you about film also and keep those in mind as you view the film as well. Think about how they are used and where they are used and why they are used at certain moments in the film.
Most of all -- enjoy watching a great movie the first time through and then get into analyzing it the second time through!

Exam - Week 2
The role of a reporter is to find out what people are thinking of an issue and to report the opinions of different stakeholders of an issue. These comments make up most of the story. The narrative helps to weave the comments into a coherent whole. Hint: Stick to one particular theme throughout the story. You can put in different details but they all have to relate to the original idea of the piece. (e.g. If your story is about black youth and their relationship with the police you DO NOT want to go into details about the life of any one particular youth).
As a reporter, you are the eyes and ears for the readers. You should try to get a feel for the story. Having a feel means getting some understanding of the emotional background of the piece and the people involved in it. Try to get a sense of the characters involved and why they feel the way they do.

Exam - Week 2
Using Quotes
The best quotes are short and bright. They surprise, shock or amuse. They reveal insights or secrets. They prove points. They allow experts to give perspective, and real people to air grievances. Don't quote simple statements of fact.
Problems to avoid when quoting people -
* Stutter quotes: Saying the same thing twice.
Mayor Bessie Chronopoulous said Tuesday she will seek a second term.
I intend to run for a second term," Chronopoulous said.
* Partial quotes: Often, it's less awkward just to paraphrase.
Weak: Smith said the money was "spent by me" in order to buy "better-looking plants for the office."
Better: Smith said he spent the money on better-looking plants for the office.
* Parenthetical info in quotes
Weak: "We can't get (the concrete barrier) to stay in one place because (La Tourette) keeps driving into it," Smith said.
Better: La Tourette's driving habits appear to be the main obstacle to keeping the concrete barrier from being moved.
"We can't get it to stay in one place because he keeps driving into it," Smith said.
* Junk quotes. Vague quotes. Quotes that say nothing.
* Stacking quotes. Just stringing a bunch of them together rather than constructing a story. You need to add your reporting.
* Weak lead quotes. Empty, boring, vague, repetitive.
* Weak end quotes. Using any old quote just to finish off the story. (Remember - I warned you against this.)

Exam
Now, the next few days will be used for revision of the work. Be sure to use the advice of your fellow students and what you know about newspaper writing to write a great article. Remember to avoid repeating information in your quotations that you have already reported. Also, make sure that lead is really good and DO NOT retell the story of the play. You need to use the story of the play to focus on the news story you are covering, but you definitely do not need to retell the story of the play.
Good luck out there!

Exam Preparation
And remember, you are smart and your English is really really good! So I will wish you good luck, but I don't think you will need it.
Saturday, November 1, 2008
Hello!
Tomorrow she will explain everything you need to know for the exam and what she expects of you when class begins. Help her out with your names and make sure you pay attention to everything she says. Be sure to bring in your news articles so she can see how you write and get a sense of what you need help with for the exam. This will also show her how dedicated of a student you are to English.
Be good and enjoy! Use the comments this week to ask anything about the exam or anything you need clarification with so that the transition between myself and Ms. Sevimli is a smooth one.
A Goodbye Note (for now)
I have really enjoyed our time reading An Inspector Calls together as well as writing Newspaper Articles and practicing newspaper writing styles. You have all been really great to work with and I really enjoy your desire to learn and practice English. Reading and writing in more than one language as well as speaking in more than one language while reading literature and trying to understand the stories is not always easy, but I think you are all really bright and completely capable of succeeding at this task.
I think you are all well prepared for the exam and Ms. Sevimli will be really happy teaching you for the few months you all have together. If you ever need anything, feel free to email me and I will respond from home. (celinec@kocschool.k12.tr)
I will be expecting you all to continue to tell your stories and post to the class blog. Ms. Sevimli and I will be updating the blog together and keeping you informed as to what is going on in class and outside of class.
I hope you enjoy Ms. Sevimli too! Take care of yourselves and keep in touch via the internet!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark (and the little baby)

Büyükada Week
A question about order came up today -- think most important information to least important information. For instance in the Strike Article: lead that includes information about what happened during the strike (most important) to a quote about what the lawyer thinks the outcome of the strike might be (least important).
So - depending on the focus of your article, you need to determine what you think the most important information is for the reader of the newspaper and for the story itself and what the least important information is for the reader and the story. It will change from article to article.

Ending Your Story
The following article is full of more suggestions about how to finish your article. It is about planning ahead.
What do you do when you can't find the ending?
What do you do when you can't find the ending?
Re-read your beginning. Why did you open that way?
Ask yourself what the story is about. What is the last thing you want the reader to remember?
Read through your notes to see if you've included everything of importance. Most news stories don't require a finely crafted ending. Just stop.
Often the best endings bring you back to the beginning. Look for ways to make that work for you.
Write a couple of different versions of the lead. Sometimes, a second-choice lead makes a great ending.
Just stop. Sometimes an abrupt ending is better than three or four aimless paragraphs in search of an ending.
It's there. You've already written it. Go back and find it.
Look to the future. What is happening next in a running story? What can we expect? Choose your ending before you start writing. Your first choice may not be the final one, but the process helps in mapping out the flow and line of the story. Also, it is much easier to change an ending than to search for one.

Ece came late to class on the fırst day of school, and I thought, "Oh - so she will be one of those girls." She has come late a few times since then, but she is most definitely NOT "one of those girls." Ece has shown that she likes to think quietly and talk with friends (mostly Aslı) and she has no problem doing both while also getting her work done.
She is deifnitely a good person to become friends with because she is the kind of girl who is able to think for herself and will say things that she means.
Presenting...Ece!
Full Name: Ece Gureylik
What does your name mean?: Queen
Place of Birth: İstanbul – American Hospital
Why were you born there?: My parents have been here for about 20 yrs or something like that.
Age: 14 yrs
Locations you lived: İstanbul. On the Asian side in Suadiye.
What hobbies do you have?: One month ago, I started to ride horses...I was riding horses, but I stopped because of the school, but I just started again.
Where do you want to go to school (university): I am hoping to do the IB program and then go to the US, but I want to go to a “normal” school and then trasfer to an art school. Too many people want to go to university for just art, so I thought it would be better to go to a “normal” school.
Brothers or sisters?: I have a sister. She is 25 yrs old. She is very old. Like, we have 11 yrs between us...almost a generation.
At 8pm at night you are: Usually I am watching television in my home.

Favorite movie: The Martian Child and The Truman Show.

Brazil has many similarities to Turkey (traffic jams, etc). It was very colorful. There was an ocean. It was the first time I went to the ocean and that’s it. I pretended that it was a normal sea and then a wave came and it was terrible.
World’s worst problem: There are many.
Something people would be surprised to know about you: I have big goals in life and I don’t always share them.
Who is your hero?: No one.
Biggest decision you are thinking about right now: I want to be in the IB program. It is an important thing for me, and if I can I will choose the IB program.

A Good Lead
http://www.projo.com/words/20030731_tp.htm
The following article is from a writer who was creating a news story. It describes the process of creating a story and choosing a focus for that story. While you read, ask yourself: What will the focus of your news story from Excursion Day be? How will you decide on a lead?
Time takes over in the quest for the right lead
By Michael P. McKinneyJournal Staff Writer
I'm still not sure the right lead ended up on this story about a barge tanker that spilled thousands of gallons of oil into Buzzards Bay off the Massachusetts coast.
I got back to the office close to 6:30 p.m. with a notebook full of imagery: Oil-covered birds near death on examination tables, oil in the water, men in spacesuits shoveling globs off the beach.
But something nagged at me. During a press conference at the Otis Air Force base, officials said a couple of oil masses in Buzzards Bay resisted efforts by ships to clean up the mess. That seemed like big enough news.
The question was: Use a straight-news lead or an anecdotal beginning about dying birds and globs of oil? For a while, I tried to do both -- in one paragraph. But that didn't work.
In the end, with time running out to write, the straightforward lead won, with birds and spacesuits getting the second paragraph.
At first, reporting the story seemed simple. I observed at Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, Mass., as men and women dunked birds in buckets of detergent and held the birds down to help them fight the oil. Plenty of drama.
But from there, the story became more difficult. It was a second-day look at the fallout of the spill, yet finding the oil everyone was talking about proved elusive. I went to Horseneck Beach in Westport, Mass. Nothing tangible there, other than people sun-bathing. Then I went to Fairhaven, Mass., where photographer Bob Thayer and I finally tracked down oil globs on the beach.
Meanwhile, I had to be mindful of the clock: A press conference was scheduled for the afternoon at Otis Air Force base over on Cape Cod. One piece of advice: The military doesn't always see time the way we do.
I made it to the gate of the base on time. The guards asked me if I had a pass to get on base. I did not. They directed me -- and some other reporters -- to a sort of impound lane. Time marched on. And on. And on. Finally, one soldier checked out all the cars then sent an escort -- at least a half-hour after the press conference started.
As we arrived, reporters streamed out of the building. That sinking feeling set in. We'd missed it.
Military and marine officials agreed to hold a mini-press conference for us. Then it was time to drive back.
Sitting at the computer, the question, as always, was what was this story about? There's no doubt people were worried about the impact the oil might have on the shellfish industry -- a major business for the region. And if those oil masses could not be contained by ships, it seemed they could become a further threat to the people who benefit from the industry.
Still, even with the debate about the top of the story, I found that the rest of it flowed pretty well. When I came to a section about the doctors trying to rescue oil-covered birds, I found that it helped to blank out the rest of the story and begin as if the birds were the lead of the piece:
``Yesterday was about small moments of heroism. In the quarantine building of Buttonwood Park Zoo, in New Bedford, four people in scrubs and plastic gloves tried to rescue birds at the edge of death. There was no time for names. Each bird had only a number.''
I don't know, maybe some version of that could have been the lead. But the clock hit 8:30 p.m. Time to let go of the story.

Büyükada Times
My husband and I visited on Children's Day last year, and it was awful. We walked and walked and really went nowhere and then walked and walked some more and got some ice cream and a waffle and left the island. At least we can always end the day with some ice cream and a waffle even when the island is crowded!
I loved seeing all of you enjoying your time together and talking to people in the island. I was happy to see some students immediately plop down next to some of the elderly men who were sitting on the benches on the water's edge. I imagine not many people stop to talk, so it was nice to see young kids talking with older people in such a positive way.
I also thought that it was ingenious of some of you to interview your horse and carriage driver while he drove you to the top of the island. It was very resourceful and a good use of time. I only hope they realized you were sincerely interested in what they had to say.
Good job my little journalists! I hope your articles are as good as they already sound!

They kissed one another in congratulation, cleared rotting food from the shelves of a grocery, and got down to serious business: getting a look at the enemy.

Grading/Returning Homework
If at anytime during the unit we are working in, you would like to fix the English and improve the assignment that you handed in once, you can hand in another copy of the assignment with the corrections made, BUT you also need to hand in the original with it.
I will only accept the corrected assignments before the end of the unit. For instance, if we do an assignment while we are reading An Inspector Calls, you must turn in the corrected version BEFORE the exam for An Inspector Calls.
Just like the Enrichment Folder, you will NOT receive EXTRA points, but you will receive an additional homework grade for correcting/revising the assignment. If you have questions, please ask them in the Comments section.
Keep an eye out for Can Peker's interview coming tomorrow!

Personal Blogs
You can work on the color sheme and layout whenever you choose, but the writing is the most important asepct. In time, you can developh it (explore it on your own) and imbed video and pictures and create a whole storybook of the things you love.
I hope you guys will really like it. I need ALL of you (everyone in both classes) to comment to this post with your URL for the blog. This is not the title of the blog, but the web address for the blog. I want to make sure every student's blog is listed on the left hand side. I am also going to remove the blogs of interest over the Bayram, so if you still want to follow one, make sure you copy the link into your "followers" section of your blogger.com home page (or Dashboard).
Hopefully all of this blogging vocabulary will make sense to you, but if it does not, please ask me questions, and I will respond in the comments of this post.
Reminder: Excursion Day will be October 8th! We will be going to the Princes' Islands. Make sure you bring your handout with you that I distributed in class.

Wed and Thurs Lesson
Here is the assignment you will get in class on Wednesday (9H - Computer Lab 3) and Thursday (9G - Computer Lab 1):
Mrs. Clark
English 9
Personal Blog
Today you will create your personal blog and begin “building content” (which means, creating posts).
Step by Step:
1. Go to blogger.com
2. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Create Your Own Blog”
3. Type in your email address (twice)
4. Type in a password (twice)
5. Choose a “Display Name” (this is the name that will come up on your blog and should probably be the same one you use when you comment on the class blog so we can avoid confusion)
6. Type in the “word verification”
7. Check the “Acceptance of terms” box
8. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Continue”
Next Screen:
1. Choose a title of your blog – this will be displayed on your blog and on your dashboard (the place where you manage your blogs)
2. Choose a blog address (or URL) and check to see if it is available. If it is not available, change it to find one that will work for you that is available (it may not be your first choice, but you have to find something that will do).
3. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Continue”
Next Screen:
1. Scroll through the designs offered and choose one that reflects the content of your blog or the mood you want your blog to have. You can always change it later if you want, but I want you to choose something for now.
Next Screen:
1. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Start Blogging”
There are 3 tabs on the next screen that you can click on and play around with. Postings/Settings/Layout. Each one will let you manipulate your blog in different ways. The two tabs I want you to focus on are the posting tab and the layout tab.
1. I want you to create at least one post today (you can create more, but I want to see at least one by the end of the period). When you create a post, title it, write it, and then click on the large orange, “Publish Post” button. Then you can view the blog and see what your post looks like. Be sure to use the spell check and proofread your post before publishing. If you notice something is not the way you wanted it, you can always go back and edit it more.
2. Using the layout tab, I want you to add some things of your choice to the side bar using the layout options. You can go and add a gadget or somehow manipulate the way comments will be received or anything that you choose, but I want to see you personalize you blog in some way.
3. Using the layout tab again, I want you to change the color scheme of your blog to make it more personalized using the “fonts and colors” link. I would also like if you went and edited the header to look the way you want it to be.
NOTE: Every time you make a change be sure to preview what you have done. This way you can go back and edit it or leave it the way you have made it if you like it.
ENJOY!!

News Articles - 1900s
note: The reason I am posting about newspaper articles and asking you to read them is because your written exam will be writing a news article surrounding the plot of the play. You need to be familiar with how newspaper articles are written in English speaking papers and you will be asked to mimic this style of writing during your exam.
May 2, 1937
New and sensational stories of terrorism, murder and violence in Harlan County, Ky., were told by witnesses before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee last week.
The killing of their 19 year-old son was described by Marshal A. Musick, a Baptist preacher and union organizer, and his wife. After the father had received repeated warning that his life was in danger, a broadside of bullets was fired into the living room of the Musick home on February 9, killing 19-year-old Bennett Musick and wounding the mother and two other children.
Holding up his crippled bullet-mutilated hands for all to see, Hugh Taylor, a former Harlan Deputy, testified that Sheriff Theodore R. Middleton had offered him “2,000 and a new automobile”, if he would forget about the bullets fired at him by other deputies when he protested the Musick killing, and hide out until the Senate investigation was over.
A Harlan deputy, “Bill” Johnson, described himself as a “gun thug” and told how he was always “goin” out and catchin’ union organizers, taken’ them for a ride and bumpin’ ‘em off.” “But” he hastened to add, “I never killed anybody-not in Harlan County anyway.”
Sheriff Middleton, who admitted, that he and his wife had acquired property valued at $102,728 in the last three years, blandly informed the committee Friday that “quite a lot of violence has been committed by my deputies.” Admitting that he knew two deputies had shot a fellow officer and left him for dead on a mountain roadside, he said: “As a rule we don’t dismiss them until they are convicted.”

Student Focus
Elif was absent soon after the school year started, and I wasn't sure why that was, but students told me she was horseback riding. When i think of horsebakc riding, I think of dirt paths through forests and peaceful trips along the waters edge. Apparently I've got it all wrong!
Elif is a competitor! She rides horses better than the cowboys in the wild west. Here is what it is like to be Elif Güleç:
Place of Birth: Istanbul, Turkey
Age: 15 yrs old
Where have you attended school: I went to Enka and then I went to a French school and then I came to Koç. I really loved Enka, and I heard Koc was like Enka, so I knew I would be happy here.
Do you have any siblings?: I have one sister. She is 9 yrs old and her name is Aslı.
At 8pm at night you are: I am eating with friends or family.

Favorite Holiday: I went to watch the European Championship with some friends. My mom came too, but I didn't see her until like 8 o'clock at night.
World’s worst problem: Education. Well, I think that is Turkey's. I am not sure about the world.
Who is your hero?: My father. He always knows what to do.
One word that describes you: "ENOUGH"

9G - start reading a blog and track it every day for the next week
Great job today in class! I loved our discussions about culture and learning about all of the ways that cultures are sometimes manipulated (positively and negatively). Many of you had really good ideas and really understood a lot of what we were talking about! Great job!

Reading
If you are a person who likes numbers, I would do a little test or game...get a timer (one that you don't have to look at) and set it for 60 seconds (one minute) start the timer and then read for the full 60 seconds, noting where you have started and stopped. Then, go back and count the words you read and write the number down.
Do this same activity (with different sections of text) at least 3 times. Then, add up the numbers and divide by 3 and you will get the average of how many words per minute you can read.
Keep in mind - reading a lot of words does not necessarily make you a "good" reader, but the more you read, the faster the words fly by. So - di this test now and then we will do it again at the end of the year and see how far your numbers have jumped!
Have fun reading!!

Student Focus
I just wanted to warn everyone ahead of time that I will be pulling aside a student here and there during lunch to interview them for the blog. I can't wait to learn more about you and to let you guys learn more about each other!

What's Up Wednesday
Reminder: bring ideas in your head to class for letter writing...what can you write to an American student about? What would you want a letter to you to say? What questions would you want someone to ask you?

Welcome to School!

Does this seem welcoming? I know you are all ready for the school year and so excited that the summer is over. I am hoping you have all the books you need and get together the proper notebooks and pens and pencils. We have at least 179 more days of school after the first day!! It will be great!
- bring Masterclass (Unit 5) and An Inspector Calls to EVERY class!
- bring a notebook (something to write on) and a pen/pencil (something to write with) to every class and BE ORGANIZED
How do you feel after the first day? I feel excited and tired at the same time.
