Narrative and Film

Just like a good story, a film is telling someone's or something's story from a certain perspective with characters in a setting. There is usually some sort of rising action and falling action and some sort of conclusion all making up the plot. There is character development as well as changes in setting.

Only, in a film, the creators are using images instead of words. So, think about how the film develops the story the same way a novel or short story might develop, but think about how the viewer uses the context of the image to understand tone and mood instead of words, like in a novel.

In a novel we can create the scene, the carracters as we want according our imagination where as in movies the scenes and characters are shown and all we can do basically is to comment on what we see.

I agree with selen. In a novel we can create the characters, the setting with our imagination but a movie limits us with the film makers thoughts.

the film maker doesn't limit the viewer...it is really that he is giving HIS (or HER) interpretation of the character and HE (or SHE) is doing it with an actress and a setting and lighting and editing...in fact, a film maker has much more to think about than an author. An author deals only with words.

In the novels word written by the author and characters phsyical description is according to our imagination but in the movies they described words by scene so we cant imagine as we do for novels.

I agree with Mrs.Clark, even though writing a book is really hard, film making is even harder. While making a movie, the setting, camera angles, editing, lightning are considered. While reading a book, the readers create imaginary characters in their minds, but in a film, the characters are made by the director, so he should choose the best characters that fit the movie best.

i don't know if one is necessarily harder than the other or if one is even better than the other -- they are just two totally different (but great) ways of telling a story.

there is so much involved in film making that requires a group of people to work as a whole while a novel requires really one person (maybe 2 if you consider the editor).

Narratives are written in first person,so it is easier for the narrator to express his(her)opinions and feelings to reader in a novel. However in movies, the director should have the suitable actors for the characters. It depends on the actors to give the real idea of the story.
