Today, everyone in the class should have their blog started. This does not mean it should be anywhere near complete, but you should start posting and creating content for it.
You can work on the color sheme and layout whenever you choose, but the writing is the most important asepct. In time, you can developh it (explore it on your own) and imbed video and pictures and create a whole storybook of the things you love.
I hope you guys will really like it. I need ALL of you (everyone in both classes) to comment to this post with your URL for the blog. This is not the title of the blog, but the web address for the blog. I want to make sure every student's blog is listed on the left hand side. I am also going to remove the blogs of interest over the Bayram, so if you still want to follow one, make sure you copy the link into your "followers" section of your blogger.com home page (or Dashboard).
Hopefully all of this blogging vocabulary will make sense to you, but if it does not, please ask me questions, and I will respond in the comments of this post.
Reminder: Excursion Day will be October 8th! We will be going to the Princes' Islands. Make sure you bring your handout with you that I distributed in class.

What's Up Wednesday
Media
How is a play different than watching television or a movie? Why do people view going to see a play as something more intellectual than turning on the television?

Wed and Thurs Lesson
Each class will be in the computer lab on Wed and Thurs - starting up your blogs. I want to give you the assignment ahead of time, so you can read it and at least familiarize yourself with what I am asking you to do.
Here is the assignment you will get in class on Wednesday (9H - Computer Lab 3) and Thursday (9G - Computer Lab 1):
Mrs. Clark
English 9
Personal Blog
Today you will create your personal blog and begin “building content” (which means, creating posts).
Step by Step:
1. Go to blogger.com
2. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Create Your Own Blog”
3. Type in your email address (twice)
4. Type in a password (twice)
5. Choose a “Display Name” (this is the name that will come up on your blog and should probably be the same one you use when you comment on the class blog so we can avoid confusion)
6. Type in the “word verification”
7. Check the “Acceptance of terms” box
8. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Continue”
Next Screen:
1. Choose a title of your blog – this will be displayed on your blog and on your dashboard (the place where you manage your blogs)
2. Choose a blog address (or URL) and check to see if it is available. If it is not available, change it to find one that will work for you that is available (it may not be your first choice, but you have to find something that will do).
3. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Continue”
Next Screen:
1. Scroll through the designs offered and choose one that reflects the content of your blog or the mood you want your blog to have. You can always change it later if you want, but I want you to choose something for now.
Next Screen:
1. Click on the large, orange arrow that says “Start Blogging”
There are 3 tabs on the next screen that you can click on and play around with. Postings/Settings/Layout. Each one will let you manipulate your blog in different ways. The two tabs I want you to focus on are the posting tab and the layout tab.
1. I want you to create at least one post today (you can create more, but I want to see at least one by the end of the period). When you create a post, title it, write it, and then click on the large orange, “Publish Post” button. Then you can view the blog and see what your post looks like. Be sure to use the spell check and proofread your post before publishing. If you notice something is not the way you wanted it, you can always go back and edit it more.
2. Using the layout tab, I want you to add some things of your choice to the side bar using the layout options. You can go and add a gadget or somehow manipulate the way comments will be received or anything that you choose, but I want to see you personalize you blog in some way.
3. Using the layout tab again, I want you to change the color scheme of your blog to make it more personalized using the “fonts and colors” link. I would also like if you went and edited the header to look the way you want it to be.
NOTE: Every time you make a change be sure to preview what you have done. This way you can go back and edit it or leave it the way you have made it if you like it.
ENJOY!!

News Articles - 1900s
Below is a newspaper article from the early 1900s (around the time period of the play). If you want to read more you can go to this site.
note: The reason I am posting about newspaper articles and asking you to read them is because your written exam will be writing a news article surrounding the plot of the play. You need to be familiar with how newspaper articles are written in English speaking papers and you will be asked to mimic this style of writing during your exam.
New and sensational stories of terrorism, murder and violence in Harlan County, Ky., were told by witnesses before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee last week.
The killing of their 19 year-old son was described by Marshal A. Musick, a Baptist preacher and union organizer, and his wife. After the father had received repeated warning that his life was in danger, a broadside of bullets was fired into the living room of the Musick home on February 9, killing 19-year-old Bennett Musick and wounding the mother and two other children.
Holding up his crippled bullet-mutilated hands for all to see, Hugh Taylor, a former Harlan Deputy, testified that Sheriff Theodore R. Middleton had offered him “2,000 and a new automobile”, if he would forget about the bullets fired at him by other deputies when he protested the Musick killing, and hide out until the Senate investigation was over.
A Harlan deputy, “Bill” Johnson, described himself as a “gun thug” and told how he was always “goin” out and catchin’ union organizers, taken’ them for a ride and bumpin’ ‘em off.” “But” he hastened to add, “I never killed anybody-not in Harlan County anyway.”
Sheriff Middleton, who admitted, that he and his wife had acquired property valued at $102,728 in the last three years, blandly informed the committee Friday that “quite a lot of violence has been committed by my deputies.” Admitting that he knew two deputies had shot a fellow officer and left him for dead on a mountain roadside, he said: “As a rule we don’t dismiss them until they are convicted.”
