Pan Shot

Panning has nothing to do with cooking (ha ha!). A Pan Shot is when the camera is stationary (in one, fixed place) and it turns from either right to left or left to right and sort of scans or pans the horizon.

Usually the camera is following a moving object and that object is kept in the middle of the frame.

Many times this shot is used when the director wants to follow the action. When you see a pan shot, imagine the camera did NOT follow the action and instead the action moved passed the camera and out of the frame. How would it change the feeling or mood of the scene? It is very insteresting to consider.

I think it's not easy to distinguish between panning and tracking since they are both used to follow the action. The main difference between them is that in panning, the camera is constant, but in tracking, the camera moves.
About your question, if the camera
didn't follow the action and the figure came out of the frame, we wouldn't be able to follow and we would stop paying attention to what's going on in that certain scene.

Panning shot is very important for some particular scenes as you and Hamdi said. If panning shot wasn't used, we wouldn't follow what wwas going on in the scene detailed and it would be kind of boring for the audiences.

imagine a fast car passing through you with a pan shot, you only see how fast the car is and you begin to be curious about where is it going

imagine the same car but shotted with tracking shot, you never get curious but you get more excited because you see the whole situation that's going on.

i think thats the main difference.

Without panning shot we wouldn't be able to see and follow the movements in the film. By panning shot we understand whats going on in the film better. We realize that there is action because the camera moves as the subject moves.

Panning shot is an important camera technique that shows us that there is some action going on at the movie. Without paninng shot the audience wouldn't follow the action packed parts of the movie and this would let the movie down.
