Just so that you know where sound in film came from (and that it wasn't always there) I thought you should go to this web site to read a little bit about when and how sound came into the movie theater.
If there were no sound in film, what would the viewer have to rely on instead?

If there were no music in the film, they would probably observe the objects and the characters more detailed but just for short time. After some time, they will start to be extremely bored and can not concentrate at the film at all.
Music is really important in film. If there no music in the film, the movie can be boring and the audiences cannot be affected, because music supplies people to feel emotion of movie.
Sometimes after silence, something weird happens. If it is not too long, it is good. When there is no music for a long time, audiences almost sleep. So music is indeed necessarily.
The ancient movies (like Charlie Chaplin) used to be no-sounded. So, the actors/actresses had to express their feelings in an exaggerated way.
If we are talking only about music and if there weren't any music in a film, we wouldn't be able to feel the things that the director wanted us to.
Music is really important for the movies. If there is no music than the movie would be so boring because sometimes the music tries to teach us something. Therefore it makes teh film a lot better to understand.
i agree with ecem, old movies didnt use to have music and that made the actors roles harder. music helps us to understand the emotions that the characters have.
Don't only comment about MUSIC. I want to know what it would be like without SOUND. Without any SOUND. No talking, no wind blowing, no footsteps when someone is walking, nothing. SOUND and MUSIC are two different things.
I agree with my friends =) music is really important but ı think sound is important too!! for example we heard sound of nature at the swamp and leeches scene and it made the scene more realistic if there was nothing we couldn't really focus on the scene and we would just watch it
