I think a lead is being in front or having an advantage against something. Like when you score a goal you lead the game by being in front and having an advantage by a goal.

In newspaper writing "lead" means, a new information which helps to explain the story further. For example, a detective might find a piece of paper clenched between the victim's hand -a lead- which would cause a chain reaction of new findings, helping him to get one step closer to the killer.

Sorry for double-commenting but lead also means a hint or a tip. For example, two posts earlier your post's title was "A Lead" and in it you implied that you wanted us to answer "who, what, why, when, where and how" in the newspaper articles we are going to write.

make sure you look at the information in the post before commenting...as i said before, if you simply define the word according to the dictionary, you are not doing the work i am asking.

i gave you an example of a lead in the post i asked about it. good job Kerim for answering according to Newspaper Writing!

I think lead means advance position or first place. For example: in playoffs boston lead 4 - 2. Boston is in the advanced position because they lead.

Sorry Mrs.Clark i forgot to read the other one before commenting.. Lead is like the major part of an article; we have to answer all of the 5ws questions : Who, when, where, what, why/how?
